Urban beaches in Fortaleza

Fortaleza has about 25 km of urban beaches.

From North to South, the urban beaches of Fortaleza are Iracema, Meireles, Mucuripe and
Praia do Futuro.

With the sea on one side and a wealth of bars, restaurants, nightclubs, dance floors and handicrafts on the other, Iracema Beach is today one of the most popular spots for the nightlife in the city and an intellectual location of the people from Fortaleza. It is also there, where the English pier is located, one of the city’s postcards. Better known as Ponte Metálica, it is a privileged place to see the sunset and to observe the dolphins.


Meireles is where locals and tourists go to stroll, bring their children to the several play grounds, drink a coconut, sit down and watch people passing by. The "feirinha de artesanato" (handicraft marke) is in Meireles. Meireles is also the area with the highest number of hotels in Fortaleza.



Mucuripe is the place of jangadas. Still used by fishermen to to into high sea, jangadas can be seen along the way during the afternoon and evenings, and returning from the sea in the morning; part of the catch of the day is sold in an old style fish market. Also, the boat trips leave from this area.

Praia do Futuro, about 7 km long, is the preferred one for bathing and surfing. Praia do Futuro was made famous by its barracas (rustic restaurants built on the beach sand), which offer excellent food and local musical shows. Most frequented beach by the tourists and people from Ceará, is one of the main entertainment complex in Fortaleza, having the restaurants as an attraction. There, beyond tasting the famous caranguejo (crab) fun is really alive with events such as comic shows, live music, amphasizing forró, traditional Cearense music.
